Johannesburg – Two women were rescued from a flooded building on Kingsway Road in the Amanzimtoti CBD on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

“Upon arrival at the building, paramedics found that the first floor of the building flooded past waist height. Paramedics searched the first and second floor, finally finding the two women,” ER 24 spokesperson said in a statement.
“The two women were carried to the nearby awaiting ambulance and assessed by paramedics. Fortunately, it was found that both women escaped injury.”

KwaZulu-Natal was hit with inclement weather on Monday as snow and freezing conditions struck many of the province’s interior towns while coastal cities were hit with a deluge of rainfall.

The province’s cooperative governance and traditional affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube issued a warning and placed the province’s disaster management teams on standby.

“We are very concerned about the poor weather conditions and we urge motorists to drive with extreme care. We are in contact with the emergency services and our disaster teams are on the ground to provide assistance in case of incidents,” said Dube-Ncube.

Several rivers in Durban were reported to be close to flooding while rush hour traffic in the city was brought to a crawl as motorists navigated the treacherous conditions.

A number of roads in the city had themselves become rivers as storm water drains failed to cope with the amount of rain.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecast showed continued snow in the mountains and the KwaZulu-Natal midlands while heavy rains were forecast for along the coast.

According to the SAWS forecasts, the weather across the province was expected to start clearing on Wednesday.
